Work Based Learning

In order to prepare our students for career and post high school training and education, we have adopted "Work Based Learning". Students learn about the different careers in their studies and then according to the experiences we can provide for them on campus, they intern in these careers. For example, we began to offer Security Guard experiences where our students practiced signing guests into the reception area, walking the perimeter to observe any potential hazards and assisted/shadowed the paid security staff. This year, the life guard training following swim lessons is another potential work based learning experience. We are working on providing experience in barbering. We have also secured CDL driver training for students seeking a career in transportation. Our science teacher is seeking to develop a gardening program known as hydroponics, growing vegetables in water instead of soil. Stay tuned for more work based opportunities in Culinary Arts and virtual auto mechanic training leading to internship in a oil change facility.

"Work-based learning (WBL) is the umbrella term used to identify activities which collaboratively engage employers and schools in providing structured learning experiences for students. These experiences focus on assisting students develop broad, transferable skills for postsecondary education and the workplace. A quality WBL program can make school-based learning more relevant by providing students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real world situations."

Coming Later This Fall : Financial Literacy Game

We will be participating in a pilot to use a game to teach our high school students about budgeting and money management. The research behind educational gaming shows that students enjoy challenging themselves and mastering the game.

Urban Assembly (UA) Presents the first Guest Speaker Event

C-Tech

We provide three different certified courses in Communication Technology for our High School students:

Telecommunications
Copper Based Wiring Systems
Fiber Optics

These courses are designed to give students basic skills and knowledge to obtain an entry level position in the cable and internet industry.

Telecommunications Technologies
This introductory system teaches all aspects of connectivity methods in today’s world. Learn the history, theory, and transmission mediums of communications, as well as Smart Home technologies found in homes and businesses.
Certification: Telecommunications Technologies

Network Cabling: Copper-Based Systems
Master the basics of copper cabling, installation, construction, and troubleshooting using our patented workstations. Up-to-date industry standards and real world workplace simulations are also a large part of the curriculum.
Certification: Network Cabling Specialist Copper Systems

Network Cabling: Fiber Optics-Based Systems

Experience all aspects of fiber optics cabling; students will learn where and when fiber applications are used and how to install this new technology.
Certification: Network Cabling Specialist Fiber Optic Systems

Students that complete the course and pass the certification tests, receive a certificate that is nationally recognized for obtaining a job in the Telecommunications field. Students that complete the Copper certification also receive an additional certification from the Leviton Manufacturing company. Jobs can include: cable installer (cable, internet wiring and fiber optics cable), cable technician, and more.

We also provide resume and cover letter writing, job interview practice and job search skills.

CDOS

The Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential is a certificate that is intended to indicate a student’s readiness for entry-level jobs. The CDOS Commencement Credential can be awarded either in addition to a Regents or Local diploma or to a student with a disability who is unable to earn a Regents or Local diploma.

The CDOS Commencement Credential is available to students with IEPs who do not take the New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA). To receive the credential, students must have attended school for at least 12 years (excluding kindergarten) or reached the end of the school year in which they turned 21. The CDOS Commencement Credential is not available to general education students.

**The CDOS Commencement Credential is NOT a diploma and cannot be used to apply to college, the military, or trade schools.

Participate in at least 216 hours of Work Based Learning.
(This can be done in a variety of ways and hours may be accrued beginning in 9th grade)
NOTE: 216 Hours is equivalent to 2 units of study or two classes and may be met by the following:
1. Actual work experience OR
2. Career & Technical Education up to 162 hours AND minimum of 54 hours of WBL OR
3. NYS registered WBL program up to 216 hours OR
4. Other WBL Options (any combination but must add up to 216 hours)

c) Community service/volunteering
d) Service learning
e) Senior project
f) School-based enterprise

CDOS is a central part of every classroom.

Our students are engaged in real-life learning experiences which are authentic and project based. Many lessons are hands-on and connect to careers. Students explore various career paths with no boundaries or limiting their choices. They participate in entrepreneurial endeavors like the school store here in our school environment. They are able to connect what they've learned to future goals and apply their skills to the real world.
